How do I become a marriage & family therapist?

So, I plan on going to UNT University of North Texas, I want to be a marriage & Family therapist but I’m not too sure what to major in or how to go about it. So someone help me? With answers that make sense, Thanks!

To be a MFT depends upon the state laws where you would practice. Some states do not even license MFTs as a counseling/therapy discipline. In the states that do, you must have a master’s degrees in either MFT, or another counseling disciplines with additional coursework and internship, e.g. I am a social worker with additional post-graduate training in MFT (Bowen Family Systems).

Then you also have to complete approved supervision of post-graduate experinece — again how many hours of each depends upon the state — and complete an examination approved by that particular state.

In most states, the educationial requirements are very similar to the requiements to be a Clinical Member of the American Assocation for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
