Neurofeedback Therapy
Has anyone tried neurofeedback therapy for adhd on their child?
I have no direct experience using neurofeedback for ADHD, and this information is based on research and discussions with clinicians in the mental health field.
At the moment, there are no neurofeedback programs approved by the FDA specifically for treating ADHD.
There are, however, some programs with limited clinical research to back them up. We still need more research in this area to see how well it works, which areas of cognition and behavior are improved, whether the improvements are sustained, and so on.
CogMed is a program — not neurofeedback, but brain-training software — that’s gotten a fair amount of positive attention recently and has some clinical evidence supporting it. II personally am not yet convinced of its effectiveness. Clinicians whom I respect have said favorable things about it, however. And I would certainly love to see convincing evidence that this program (or something similar) works, either as an adjunct to, or instead of, medications and other effective management strategies.
If you are considering this program, or one of the other programs like “Play Attention”, for your child, I would suggest you ask several questions:
1) How does this therapy work?
2) What controlled studies show it works?
3) What changes should I expect to see in my child, and how long can I expect them to last?
4) If we miss a session, or stop coming for neurofeedback therapy, will it be less effective?
5) How many sessions are required/recommended, and how much does each one cost?
6) What percent of children benefit from this in the long-term, and how has this been measured? (Be skeptical if they say 100% or say it’s based on their experience…ask to see some real data.)
I don’t mean to sound like a wet blanket — I am actually very encouraged by the research that is going into non-drug therapies for ADHD, and hope there will be more of it, because Lord knows we need more options — but I also don’t want people to get fleeced by programs that don’t actually help kids, and may delay them getting other help that might be more effective. That said, it’s unlikely that most of the available neurofeedback programs would be harmful, so if you have the money to afford it, it probably couldn’t hurt to try along with other approaches!
